![]() I was never going to be the beautiful, admired, gracious Meg or the sweet, meek, victim Beth. In short, I probably wanted to be Jo because I already was Jo. And above all, Jo wasn’t pretty–she was awkward and unkempt and a tomboy. Jo was a writer, even though women weren’t supposed to be writers. Like everyone else who’s ever read the book, I wanted to be Jo.
